Captain America might not have a big screening outing until Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, but that hasn’t stopped him getting his hands dirty in some more informal adventures ahead of time. A new video apparently shows Cap getting arrested by riot police in Hong Kong—but not all is as it seems.
This does not appear to be an elaborate Marvel viral tie-in (tho anything is possible these days). But video of the Hong Kong protestor dressed like the Star-Spangled Man being taken into police custody is going viral on Facebook all the same.
Over the last month, there have been at times violent protests and mass demonstrations in the partially autonomous Chinese territory. Hong Kong residents, angry at a failure by Chinese authorities to allow totally free elections, have taken to the streets by the tens of thousands to demand reforms and resignations. The police have responded in force with riot shields and tear gas, and protesters have responded by carrying umbrellas to deflect the noxious chemicals—spawning the term the “Umbrella Revolution.”
The Captain America look-a-like was reportedly arrested on Oct. 24 in the Mong Kok region, amid continued tensions. For now, he’ll have to fight for his own freedom before he gets around to defending the rest of us.
