Pfc. Bradley Manning is one of 200 people nominated for the prestigious award, reported Russia Today. Manning was nominated by political group Icelandic Parliament for the Movement (To read the nomination letter to the Nobel Peace Prize committee, visit bradleymanning.org.)

“This person has been sitting in jail for nearly two years, where he’s been criminalized for blowing the whistle on war crimes,” said group member and artist Birgitta Jónsdóttir on Russia Today. “It’s our opinion that it is not a criminal act to blow the whistle on war crimes or blow the whistle on any crimes. We feel that by these leaks, for example the video Collateral Murder, the world…needs to know what is really going on.”

Manning is currently being held at a medium-security facility in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., on charges stemming from the alleged release of more than 700,000 classified military documents to Wikileaks.

While Jonsdottir admits that Manning’s nomination is meant to send political message, she believes that “he has just as much chance as anybody else.”
