Comedian Albert Brooks announced his bid for presidency last night after an action-packed evening of live tweeting the Republican presidential debate.
“That’s it,” Brooks wrote just before 10pm EST. “I have decided to run for president. I’m not kidding. Good night. #CNNdebate”
Doubts surround the announcement since Albert Brooks is a notorious prankster on Twitter and shouldn’t be taken seriously anywhere outside of his recent role as the boldly serious Bernie Rose in Drive.
But the tweet did manage to cause a bit of a stir. According to the social media search analytics tool Topsy, Brooks’s announcement received 171 retweets, including 11 from users Topsy deems influential.
One particularly notable mention came from actor John Cusack, who, when asked by user @heykim if he’d serve as Brooks’s VP, replied “No his neurologist and psychopharmacologist.”
Only time will tell if Albert Brooks throws his hat into the Republican race, but one thing’s for sure: If he does, you can bet your lunch that the debates will get a whole lot funnier.
