An Australian surf instructor claims his iPhone 7 burst into flames and caught on fire—and Apple says it’s investigating.
Surfer Mat Jones said left his phone under a pile of clothing while giving a lesson. That’s when his car reportedly caught fire, leaving his backseat a charred mess.
Apple has not issued a formal statement, but the company told the Next Web it’s looking into the matter.
The timing is less than ideal. Samsung, Apple’s primary competitor, is dealing with a global recall of its Galaxy Note 7 after countless devices caught fire. The devices are now banned on all U.S. flights.
The lithium batteries found in iPhones can explode if they become overheated, overcharged, or damaged. However, Jones told 7 News that he hadn’t dropped the phone or used an off-brand charger.
