In a 1993 interview with Rolling Stone, Jackson explained that songs like “Nasty” and “What Have You Done for Me Lately?” evolved from the need to defend herself from predatory men as a young woman and assert her independence: “Control meant not only taking care of myself but living in a much less protected world. And doing that meant growing a tough skin. Getting attitude.”
