In his final hours in office, President Donald Trump threw himself one last party, albeit an uncharacteristically solemn one. His grown children wept as Trump delivered his farewell address at Joint Base Andrews.
Twitter could not get enough. To many online, Trump’s final day in office was cause for the pettiest celebration imaginable.
The timeline was flooded with images of Trump’s children’s tears alongside giddy captions and jokes. It was even set to music.
“I’m going to make the sound of Ivanka sobbing my ringtone,” tweeted comedian John Hartzell.
One enterprising user made an entire thread of Trump tears.
Another selected “appropriate music” for the occasion: “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
Many felt the occasion called for jokes.
After four years that brought the nation kids in cages, a Muslim ban, 400,000 deaths from a (still raging) pandemic, a resurgence of white supremacy, tens of thousands of lies, horrific police killings of unarmed Black people, and an insurrection attempt egged on by a man who many believe will be immortalized as “the worst president in history,” Americans are clearly delighted to have something to celebrate: dancing on his presidency’s grave.
