Nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of movies remains uncertain as COVID is keeping most movie-going audiences at home. But Netflix is pushing full steam ahead as it debuts its 2021 slate with plans to release at least one movie a week onto the platform this week.
In a new preview released online, Netflix teased out more than a third of the 71 Netflix original films coming out this year. As in previous years, it’s a little bit of everything from Oscar contenders (Malcolm and Marie) and directorial debuts (Halle Berry’s Bruised, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tick, tick… BOOM!) to the final installment of Netflix original movie trilogies (The Kissing Booth 3, To All The Boys: Always And Forever).
Along with messages from the likes of Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, Regina King, Chris Hemsworth, and Jason Momoa, Netflix also gave viewers its first look at many of the movies being released in 2021 including Don’t Look Up, a new film starring Leonardi DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
Although some have raised concerns about the potential for running out of content as COVID-19 restrictions delayed the production of new films and shows, Netflix appears to be doubling down. But Netflix releasing its full 2021 slate—minus potential acquisitions that might be finalized later—comes as it has to compete with Warner Bros.’s hybrid release schedule for all of its 2021 films in theaters and on HBO Max.
Outside of Warner. Bros, Hollywood may have to soon mull pushing back the release dates of its major films yet again due to COVID, and Morbius, Sony’s blockbuster starring Jared Leto as the Marvel villain, has been pushed back by seven months for an Oct. 8 release.
