Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is getting mocked online for his over-the-top reaction to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s holiday travel recommendation.

Even though the coronavirus is reportedly killing two people per minute in the U.S., shattering records, the nation has not yet seen its post-Thanksgiving peak, according to Fauci. In an interview with MSNBC, Fauci warned that the current surge in hospitalizations “is not fake” and echoed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recent holdiay travel advice.

“I know how difficult that is, we all have a strong degree of empathy knowing—and myself included—about wanting to be with your family, wanting to have a large Christmas dinner with family and friends over,” Fauci told MSNBC. “Right now that just should not be done. We should avoid travel and avoid congregate settings.”

Jordan responded by accusing the nation’s top infectious diseases expert of wanting to cancel Christmas.

“What will he cancel next? Saying Merry Christmas?” Jordan questioned on Twitter Friday.

The tweet is getting ratioed, leading Jordan’s name to trend into Saturday morning.

People were quick to remind Jordan that listening to public health experts by abstaining from unnecessary travel does not mean one cannot celebrate Christmas.

Many are mockingly mistaking Jordan’s account for a parody one and questioning how he even became an elected official in the first place. “Thought this was like a Jim Jordan parody tweet when I first read it. It is, in fact, just Jim Jordan,” one user wrote.

Others are slamming Jordan for speaking out against science but allegedly turning a bilnd eye to sexual abuse. Some, however, thought the tweet was on-brand.

“He doesn’t understand the concept of warning people of danger,” one user wrote “in defense” of Jordan.
