The presidential election remains undecided, anxiety levels are through the roof, and Americans still live in hell as of Wednesday morning. At least one sliver of good news emerged on Tuesday night, though: Oregon decriminalized hard drugs.
Oregonians voted to pass Measure 110 on Tuesday, making Oregon the first state in the U.S. to decriminalize the possession of illegal drugs, including cocaine, heroin, oxycodone, and methamphetamine, OPB reports. The new measure, which takes effect Feb. 1, will reclassify possession of small amounts of drugs as a civil violation, resulting in a $100 fine that violators can avoid by taking a health assessment. Selling and making drugs will remain illegal.
Oregon’s move to decriminalize hard drugs will ostensibly go a long way toward destigmatizing drug addiction, ending the farcical War on Drugs, and ushering in more rehabilitative responses to illegal drug use. Oregon will also reallocate the money from its cannabis tax to fund health assessments, addiction treatment, and other services for people who struggle with drug addiction. Ultimately, it’s a major win for Oregon—and a major source of memes for social media users.
Many of the immediate responses to Oregon’s decriminalization of hard drugs disregarded the nuances of the measure and instead boiled the decision down to: “LOL we can get fucked up in Oregon now.”
The news of decriminalized cocaine, heroin, and meth prompted an onslaught of ridiculous photos and videos of people trying to consume all of them at once.
Other people figured Oregonians would be straight vibing from here on out.
