We’ve all had that moment where a text was misinterpreted, a joke misconstrued. Eliza Petersen took us back to what might have been the first ever misunderstanding with her viral “Meatier meteor” TikTok.
In the Sept. 9 video, Petersen plays both God and an angel, engaging in a conversation about making dinosaurs “meatier.” But the angel misheard, and thought God said “meteor.” The video ends with both of them repeating “meatier” and “meteor” as they tear up.
The TikTok is a take on a viral tweet from January, though Petersen did give the original poster credit. Her video was reposted on Twitter, where she was lauded for her dramatic performance. It now has more than 12 million views, and has spawned some memes as well.
“Meteor Meatier is a cultural reset,” went one tweet. If you think about it, the dinosaurs being wiped out was pretty much the first cultural reset.
According to BuzzFeed, Petersen volunteers with the paleontology department of the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City, and she posted a few photos of her “on the job” to Twitter.
For continuity, she posted a follow-up from the museum, titled “God faces the aftermath,” set to Gary Jules’ “Mad World.”
As BuzzFeed details, she didn’t just get virality out of the experience. Petersen was diagnosed with breast cancer at 19, and bills from extensive treatment “piled up really aggressively.” She put her CashApp handle in a tweet, and says over the course of two days, she was able to pay off at least one major hospital bill.
