An investigation by Fair Lawn school officials has been launched in response to an alleged video showcasing an assault toward a special needs student. The video, which was originally posted to Snapchat, displays an unnamed boy holding the victim by his shoulders while another unnamed boy pulls his pants down to his ankles, exposing the victim’s genitalia. The incident, which took place off campus grounds, was reported by other students to their parents when the clip started to gain traffic on TikTok.
In a statement posted to Fair Lawn Public School District’s Facebook page, Superintendent Nicholas Norcia revealed that the district received “dozens of emails and phone calls alerting us to a disturbing video on TikTok that involved Fair Lawn School District students.” He assured parents that the district would respond appropriately and also contacted the police, concluding that, “This type of behavior is absolutely unacceptable.”
According to Daily Voice, a police investigation is in the initial stages and interviews are being conducted, as of early last Friday. The case is ongoing, but it is likely the perpetrators will face repercussions. While perceived as a common form of bullying in TV and film, “pantsing,” or indecent exposure, can be charged as a misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, or felony. In other cases, the assault has also been charged as a sexual offense.
