A video posted to Reddit on Tuesday shows a shirtless, maskless man yelling at Ulta employees and calling one of them “retarded.” The customer has been dubbed a “Karen.”
At the beginning of the video, which was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday, the man stands in the doorway of the store and appears to yell at others in the store.
The Ulta manager asks the customer if he used curbside pickup and says the order must go through the app.
The customer, who remains unidentified, responds to the employee by asking if she is “retarded,” and the person holding the camera gasps.
“No, I’m not actually, and there’s a child,” she responds. “I’m not doing a cash transaction with you.”
The customer asks her what her name is. She says her name is Michelle and that she’s a manager.
“You’re telling me I can’t buy that for what reason now,” the customer says.
Michelle explains that she is not doing a cash transaction. The customer says, “Curbside service, like everyone is doing.”
Michelle says the curbside service must be an online order.
The customer says, “I don’t do the app, I pay cash, cash money. Do you understand that little girl?”
Someone else says that he must also wear a mask in the store. The customer asks the employees if they are on drugs.
“I will call the cops if you don’t exit my store,” Michelle says. “You keep using vulgar language. There is a child right there.”
The customer says, “What vulgar language?”
Michelle says she refuses to repeat it.
“Get the boss man,” the customer says. “My family are all litigators, this is bullshit. You’re doing this to the wrong guy.”
Another employee reemphasizes that wearing a mask in the store is a company-wide policy.
“And I’m telling you, I cannot wear the mask,” the customer says. “I’m medically exempt, do you understand that?”
The customer then looks into the camera and asks, “Are you filming me?” To which the person recording says, “I absolutely am.”
The customer steps closer to the camera as the video abruptly ends.
In a May 11 statement, Ulta said that customers are required to wear masks in every location and must practice social distancing.
“We take our responsibility to make our stores safe seriously and believe our measured approach offers you options to shop in the ways you prefer,” the statement said.
One person commented on Reddit that the “dude is burnt out surfer. He also needs a good punch on the face.”
Another said, “I hope your daughter was not too scared. I have no clue what his issue is. I have 80 year old parents that are sure every app is stealing from them. Guess what they use since COVID? Apps. They keep them safe.”
Ulta did not immediately respond to the Daily Dot’s request for comment.
