I know a spot meme

As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And, as a new meme dictates, so, therefore, is a “spot,” when meeting up with someone for a date or other some such romantic appointment. In any case, anyone who has ever been told “I know a spot” only to arrive at a meeting place of dubious character will definitely find this meme wholly relatable.

According to Know Your Meme, the “I know a spot” (or alternately, “I know a place“) meme originated on June 22, when Twitter user Imane Kwan joked, “guys be like ‘I know a spot’ and then take u to Burnaby Mountain,” of the forested elevation overlooking the British Columbia city of the same name. The context of the tweet implies that Kwan very much would not like to be taken to Burnaby Mountain on a date.

As Kwan’s tweet began to go viral, others began riffing off of it by quote-tweeting or adding their own variations. In many cases, these offerings even eclipsed the virality of the original tweet.

In some cases, the “I know a spot” memes hit a little too close to home—if you know what we mean.

In what will come as little surprise to anyone who spends a good amount of time on the platform, the “I know a spot” meme quickly became popular on K-pop Twitter.

Even the official Twitter account for the state of freaking New Jersey got in on the “I know a spot” fun:

As anyone who has ever visited (or lived adjacent) to the state of New Jersey, that tweet is painfully accurate. If a New Jersey resident tells you “I know a spot” and it doesn’t serve pie out of a rotating glass case, then they picked the wrong damn spot.
