Thanks to the independence referendum, Scots have now been polled to the brink of insanity. They’ve been cold-called by campaigners. They’ve been tweeted at by celebrities. Facebook has even given them a new “I voted” button to promote discussion.
But there is one place that has not yet been exploited for its full #indyref potential, and that place is Grindr.
A gay hookup app may not sound like the ideal location for informed debate, but a surprising number of Scottish guys seemed happy enough to talk politics in between trying to get laid. Tumblr user machotrouts embarked on this heroic feat of citizen journalism by polling 655 Scottish Grindr users.
Among those who actually answered, 114 said they would vote No to independence, 101 would vote Yes, and the rest were either undecided or avoided answering in some way. Six were apparently “too horny to answer,” an option that might still be relevant when collecting polling data from a more typical source.
Impressively, the 54/46 No/Yes split among Grindr users actually reflects the results of most other polls, which for the past week have leaned very slightly toward Scotland staying in the U.K. So what we’ve learned here is that if you want accurate political commentary, go to Grindr. Or something.
