As the coronavirus spreads, it is coming to affect all sorts of things we never realized were of concern during a pandemic. Possibly the weirdest of these? Facial hair.
The CDC released an infographic explaining which facial hairstyles are compatible with the surgical masks that help keep infection at bay. Apparently, if you have hair on the area where the mask seals against the face that seal will be imperfect, allowing bacteria and viruses access— including the coronavirus.
The CDC explains why in an old blog post for No Shave November. Because of the irregular surface provided by the hair, and its large size compared to the particulates masks try to keep out, facial hair under the seal creates a nice series of corridors for them to pass through—right at your nose and mouth.
There are some concerns over the styles the CDC have OKed.
Why anyone would sign off on the Hitler ‘stache even if it does fit perfectly under the mask is a bigger question.
People are also loving the chance to come for hipsters, as most of their preferred styles are incompatible with the masks.
A surprising number of people would apparently rather die than shave off their facial hair.
We salute you, you weird beard kings. But also, maybe reconsider.
