The usual drag that is the political internet brightened a little this week when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) posted a photo of a new French bulldog puppy to Instagram. The New York lawmaker showed off her new friend on Jan. 6 in a story and asked for name ideas.
At the time, she asked for name ideas and wrote, “he doesn’t have a name yet! We are thinking something Star Trek related or Bronx/Queens/NYC/social good related.”

On Thursday, the lawmaker seemed to get closer in a conversation with the Daily Dot, rattling off a number of Star Trek names and Pelham, which is a neighborhood in her district. She also told us that she got the dog in Virginia.
But when we talked to her again on Friday, she still hadn’t made a decision on the name.
The congresswoman told the Daily Dot that she’s down to about three names, saying that she’s getting closer to a name “as a personality emerges.”
Ocasio-Cortez added that she needs to get a name for her dog soon because she can’t take him to the vet until he has a name.
Unsurprisingly, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was upset that she apparently got her dog from a breeder instead of a shelter.
The confrontational organization wrote on Twitter “with millions of dogs, including Frenchies, homeless in shelter cages waiting for homes, @AOC’s choice to publicize getting a purebred puppy is disappointing.”
