Five years after his last album release and three years after the hit “Despacito,” Justin Bieber finally released new music. To the delight of fans, the Canadian singer dropped his new single “Yummy” on Friday and hinted at a new album coming in 2020. But not everyone was thrilled with the hype over what Bieber gave us.
Twitter users almost immediately began dragging Bieber for his “mediocre” song and music video.
“In 2020, can we stop letting male artists get away with being THIS mediocre? If a female dropped a song and visual like this they’d be dragged,” Twitter user @fkajack wrote.

Bieber’s song is a subdued but catchy bop with lyrics like, “Ain’t on the side. You’re number one. Yeah every time I come around, you get it done.” He continues with the lyrics, “Love the way you split it. Hundred racks. Help me spend it, babe. Light a match. Get litty babe.” The music video features a neon pastel palette and Bieber simply feasting and partying.
The music video has been compared to an SNL skit and was even called “the worst song of the decade.”

It didn’t take long for Twitter to start comparing Bieber’s lyrics to those of other favorite artists to compare the way the singers talk about their partners.
“Justin Bieber writing about his partner: yeah you got that yummy yum that yummy yum.
Harry Styles writing about his partner: sweet creature had another talk about where it’s going wrong but we’re still young we don’t know where we’re going but we know where we belong,” Twitter user @mutualouie wrote.

Some Twitter users even compared Bieber’s lyrics to songs from childhood movies like Camp Rock.
“Joe Jonas writing about a girl he doesn’t know: You’re the voice I hear inside my head the reason that I’m singing, I need to find u, I gotta find u, you’re the missing piece I need the song inside of me,” Twitter user @ClaryJessica joked.

Regardless of the Twitter debate, “Yummy” is on track to make the Billboard U.K. Top 10, according to Billboard. But fans will have to wait and see if “Yummy” continues to perform well.
