Bayern Munich won the all-German Champions League final in 2013 but hasn’t been back to the title game since. Given the perennial talent the team fields, that’s a bit unexpected, even with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, PSG, Barcelona, and Real Madrid in the mix. But with a slightly more wide-open field than usual, the German giants will look to get their Group B campaign going. Belgrade Red Star, officially known in Champions League listings by the Serbian name Crvena Zvezda, will be Bayern’s first opponent, with both Olympiacos and Tottenham Hotspur waiting around the bend.

Bayern Munich vs. Belgrade Red Star: What to watch for
Some younger talents have been in the Bayern lineup of late, including Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry, who both featured in midfield for Bayern’s 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig on Saturday. But if you know Bayern, you know how this team has rolled for years now: Manuel Neuer in goal, Robert Lewandowski up top, Jerome Boateng as a rock in defense, and Thomas Muller in the mix.
Crvena Zvezda is captained and vice-captained respectively by Marko Marin, a former German international who helped bring Germany to a third-place World Cup finish in 2010, and Milan Borjan, who American fans might recognize as Canada’s goalkeeper of choice.
