Club América vs. Tigres UANL: Why it matters
Tigres sit sixth in the Liga MX 2019 Apertura table, and Cruz Azul is 13th, which sounds uncharacteristic for both of the Mexican powers. But in an unusually tight Apertura race, Tigres is only three points off the lead, and Cruz Azul is only six points off. Plus, it’s still early in the season.
Tigres, who have their usual complement of stars available, including Eduardo Vargas and Andre-Pierre Gignac, have drawn five straight matches in Liga MX action, including a 1-1 draw Friday to Tijuana that saw them play a man down for most of the contest thanks to Luis Enrique Quinones’ red card. Cruz Azul, meanwhile, is coming off a scoreless draw with lowly Veracruz.
While the match itself doesn’t directly affect their Liga MX standings, winning the inaugural title brings a nice confidence boost along with something shiny to put in the trophy case.
