The Premier League is back! And it’s back with an episode of Friday night football that’s particularly compelling. Liverpool, which came oh-so-close to pipping Manchester City at the post in last year’s Premier League, welcomes Norwich City back to the Prem with a match at Anfield. The Reds, while they didn’t win the league, are now reigning Champions League winners, and bring back all the key players from their successful campaign of last year. While other challengers have bolstered their rosters over the summer, the conventional wisdom early on is that the Premier League is a two-team race, with Liverpool decidedly being one of those teams.

Liverpool vs. Norwich City in the Premier League opener: What to watch for

Liverpool is still rounding into form after a summer in which most players embarked on a tour of the U.S. One notable exception was Sadio Mane, who had Africa Cup of Nations duty for a Senegal team that made it to the finals, gave up a 2nd-minute goal to Algeria, and couldn’t find an equalizer. In the Community Shield match on Sunday, the Reds were edged by title rivals Manchester City 5-4 in PKs. While a Community Shield win is a nice way to kick off the season, losing it is certainly not indicative of how the season’s going to go for Liverpool. Getting an opening match at home against a newly promoted team, after all, is about the easiest pathway available to a title favorite.

That newly promoted team, Norwich City, got back to the Prem by winning the Championship outright. It’s certainly got a lot of history; the first-ever football chant is “On the Ball, City,” penned for the Canaries in 1890 and still used today. Truth is, though, they still have a Championship-caliber side on the ball, with veteran Dutch keeper Tim Krul and Swiss striker Josef Drmic among their most-recognizable players. Many pundits have Norwich to slot into the bottom three—specifically, 19th place—and only spending a year in England’s top-flight league before returning to the second tier.
