At this point in their careers, Chris Arreola is an ideal opponent for undefeated heavyweight contender Adam Kownacki. Arreola has fought for a world title three times. He’s also lost every time he’s faced an elite opponent, even though he does have a few solid victories during his 16-year career.

In Kownacki’s eyes, his fight vs. Arreola—which can be live streamed for free on Fox—is a good measuring stick for him and his career.

“I think he’s still one of the biggest names in the heavyweight division,” Kownacki told reporters this week. “With all the great fighters he was in there with, he beat a lot of them. And then against the top ones, he came up a little bit short. So I knew if I could beat Chris Arreola, I’m more on the side of those that are really on the top of their game and top of the division. I think beating a guy like Chris Arreola puts me up there in the top-10 or top-five categories.”

Adam Kownacki vs. Chris Arreola: Why it matters

Kownacki (19-0, 15 knockouts) and Arreola (38-5-1, 33 KOs) get to play out a classic boxing storyline. On one side of the ring, it’s the undefeated prospect who’s trying to prove he can compete for a world title. On the other side, it’s the veteran who’s probably too old to be elite at this point in his career, but who will give his young upstart opponent a real test.

Kownacki has shown elite-level talent, but to get his eventual shot at a title, he’ll have to bust through Arreola, who does have victories against second- or third-tier opponents like Jameel McCline, Eric Molina, and Brian Minto. But he’s also lost to titlists Deontay Wilder, Wladimir Klitschko, and Bermane Stiverne (twice) as Arreola attempted to become the first Mexican heavyweight champion in history. Now, he’ll try to stop Kownacki’s attempt to become the first Polish heavyweight champ ever.

“I wouldn’t consider it an upset if I win,” Arreola said. “I’m here to win. I’m supposed to win. Just because he’s undefeated, that doesn’t mean anything. He’s fought some good fighters, but I’ve fought better.”

He added, “This is a whole new challenge for him. He’s never faced anyone like me. I’ve had a strong training camp and I’ve gotten tremendous work in this camp. This isn’t the same Arreola who fought Deontay Wilder.”

Maybe Arreola doesn’t consider himself the underdog, but the oddsmakers certainly do. Kownacki is a -3500 favorite, meaning you’d have to bet $3,500 to earn a $100 payday. Arreola, meanwhile, is an 11/1 underdog.

Still, Arreola has a puncher’s chance. Even if Kownacki, thus far in his career, has shown a fantastic chin, Arreola still has power in his punches.

“My focus is completely on Chris Arreola,” Kownacki said this week. “Of course somewhere in the back of your mind, you think about the future. But I know that I have to take care of business Saturday before anything. … This is great exposure for me and we’re going to give the fans a great fight. We’re both coming in with heavy hands and we’ll be ready to let them go.”
