According to new data from TorrentFreak, porn uploads on Pirate Bay in 2013 make up more than a third of the site’s total content, surpassing TV, movie, game, and music uploads. While TV and movie uploads combined make up 44 percent of the site’s total uploads, porn content alone comes in at 35 percent, with music and games accounting for just 9 and 2 percent of the site’s total uploads, respectively.

Given the piracy epidemic that’s currently decimating the adult film industry, it’s not that surprising that a substantial percentage of the files on Pirate Bay are of the XXX-rated variety. What is kind of surprising, however, is that the number of porn uploads on the site seems to have increased in recent years, as indicated by this spiffy TorrentFreak chart:

The data also indicates that the number of Pirate Bay uploads has increased exponentially in the past two years, with the number of uploads doubling to nearly 75,000 a month.

So how to explain the rise of porn uploads in the past few years? TorrentFreak attributes the increase to Pirate Bay making its porn category public back in 2012 (prior to that, users could only access the category while logged in). Whatever the reason, it’s clear that the prevalence of porn uploads on sites like Pirate Bay, while great for fans, doesn’t exactly bode well for the adult industry, which is already crippled by competition from tube sites.
