As the massive Camp Fire in California threatened to burn down their house, Andrea Gaylor and her husband were unable to return home, forcing them to abandon their dogs Madison and Miguel. But weeks later, owner Gaylord found Madison sitting among the ashes and rubble of their home, patiently waiting for his owner to return.

Vice reports that Shayla Sullivan, an animal rescue volunteer at K9 Paw Print Rescue in Pittsburg, California, posted Facebook updates with Madison’s story.

“I’m so HAPPY to report that Andrea was allowed to return to her property today and THERE MADISON WAS!” Sullivan wrote on Facebook. “He had stayed to protect what was left of his home, and NEVER gave up on his people!”

Sullivan also helped reunite Gaylord with Miguel, who fled almost 100 miles to escape the flames.

“There’s our dog, waiting,” Gaylord told ABC 10. “Imagine the loyalty of hanging in through the worst of circumstances and being here waiting. It was so emotional.”

As Vice reports, the Camp Fire destroyed more than 18,000 homes and structures throughout California and was named the most fatal fire in the state’s history.
