On the eve of Game of Thrones‘ final season, Saturday Night Live brought back all your favorite dead characters. Well, sort of. Jason Momoa made his first SNL appearance last night, and while less than impressive in terms of humor, he did bring back his barbarian Game of Thrones character, Khal Drogo.
Kenan Thompson, in full GoT garb, assisted Momoa in hosting the newest cable talk show, Khal Drogo’s Ghost Dojo, where some of the many characters killed off during the show came together to check in.
King Joffrey, played by Kate McKinnon, High Sparrow (Pete Davidson), and Beck Bennett as Hodor all dropped by. SNL vet Thompson carried the sketch, and Momoa was left with mostly grunts and a rib to chew on.
Even the jokes that were set up to really make an impact, like the one referring to Kevin Hart backing out of the Oscars, seemed to have weird timing.
But at this point, everyone is so starved for GoT content that anything will do. It’s been almost a year and a half since the seventh (and penultimate) season ended.
It’s important to note that while not a good comedic performer, Momoa was certainly good to look at in his getup. You know the drill: No shirt, eyeliner, beard, killer hairstyle.

And while in theory, this skit should have been the strongest, Momoa as an Elf on the Shelf was probably his best moment of the night.
The Aquaman star played an elf who had to tell Santa that this year his assigned thirteen-year-old boy had been spending a lot of time partaking in a maybe-naughty, maybe-nice solo activity.
When Santa tried to find out what his kid wanted for Christmas, Momoa responded, “soft socks,” explaining they won’t be soft for long.
He was funny, his timing was on point, and he ran with the simple conceit. Mikey Day, Melissa Villaseñor, and Beck Bennett as Santa rounded out the surprisingly sex-positive sketch.
