Former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks was spotted boarding Air Force One over the weekend and the internet has a lot of theories as to why she would be flying with President Donald Trump.
Hicks, who resigned from her post at the White House earlier this year, boarded Air Force One on Saturday when Trump left from New Jersey to a campaign rally in Ohio, according to CNN.
Hicks was close to Trump, and worked with him before his 2016 presidential campaign, so the internet could not help but speculate why she was with the president on Saturday.
Many people on Twitter thought the president could be talking to Hicks about her place in Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe into Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election and other related matters. She was interviewed by Mueller’s team and also testified before the House Intelligence Committee.
Several people pointed out that the former communications director was present when Trump helped craft a statement for his son, Donald Trump Jr., after the news broke that he met with a Russian lawyer in Trump Tower who said she had damaging information on Hillary Clinton.
On Sunday, Trump tweeted that the meeting his son had with the Russian lawyer was about getting “information on an opponent,” and defended it as “totally legal and done all the time in politics.”
Others compared Hicks’ being on Air Force One to the meeting between former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and former President Bill Clinton during the 2016 campaign. Conservatives pointed to the meeting as a potential witness tampering amid the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server.
Of course, there were others who dreamed up a liberal fantasy where the former communications director was collecting evidence for Mueller’s probe.
There is no proof that Trump engaged in witness tampering and Hicks could have just simply been meeting with her former boss. But that hasn’t stopped the speculation.
