The big new releases on Amazon Prime, the one to watch for is Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, a Prime original series that stars The Office’s John Krasinski as a CIA analyst thrust into the war on terror in the Middle East. Picnic at Hanging Rock

Based on the 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, cinephiles will likely be familiar with Picnic at Hanging Rock from Peter Weir’s 1975 adaptation of the same name. Both versions focus on the disappearance of a group of students and a governess from an Australian girls school called Appleyard College during a picnic on Valentine’s Day, 1900. Where the miniseries and the film diverge is in how they chronicle the aftermath of these events. While the film resolves little of the mystery, choosing to focus more on the effects the women’s disappearance has on the school and its denizens, the miniseries expands the story to include more from Lindsay’s novel, providing additional backstory and answering some of the questions the movie ignores. —Chris Osterndorf

Lady Bird

Lady Bird made me reconsider Dave Matthews Band. In Greta Gerwig’s debut feature, Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan), a bull-headed high school senior, listens to the 1996 single “Crash Into Me” with her best friend after they get their hearts broken. I wasn’t expecting the scene to hit so hard—the song has been used in movies to schmaltzy effect, and DMB rendered a punchline—but it was the first of several times my eyes involuntarily welled up.  —Audra Schroeder

The Remix

Singing competitions are a dime a dozen and a staple of reality television. Amazon’s The Remix takes a familiar format and adds a simple wrinkle: 10 duos will create remixes of popular Bollywood songs and judges whittle the groups down until a winner is crowned. The show features some of India’s most popular singers and DJs, and the result is a high energy and highly entertaining show. —Eddie Strait
