There can only be one.

The original Ceiling Cat is one of the oldest and most hallowed memes on the internet, originally appearing sometime around early 2006 before becoming a bona fide LOLCat deity. And while there may never be another quite the same, every now and then there is a contender for a new ceiling cat.

For example, back in 2016 a one-year-old cat named “Gizmo” went viral after actually getting himself trapped in a ceiling when his family was in the middle of renovating their home. Thankfully, after a harrowing 24 hour ordeal, Gizmo was rescued, unharmed, albeit hungry.

In this instance, Ceiling Cat comes to us from Scottish tweeter and self-proclaimed “#1 Cool Cat fan” Emma (@CampbellxEmma), who posted the following photos of a cat that a friend’s mother discovered while visiting an animal welfare league.

The tweet quickly went viral with others tweeting memes and references, because—as Emma notes—the Ceiling Cat era was “the last time the internet was great.”

We still don’t know why this cat in particular lives in a ceiling, but there are so many unanswered questions. It seems to be okay, at least? At the time of this writing, the poster has not yet responded to a Daily Dot request for comment, but we will update if and when one becomes available.
