Every day, the Daily Dot finds something that people on Facebook are sharing and, in turn, shares it with you—with a little explanation. Here’s today’s share.
In an era where we hear a barrage of bad things about CEOs, Facebook users are thrilled to have found a counterexample: Jim Sinegal, of Costco, who paid his workers an average of $17/hour and keeps his own salary, without bonuses, at $350,000.
“Good guy Costco,” reads the caption of a photo of Sinegal, an image liked by almost 100,000 people and shared by almost 50,000. It’s superimposed with text illustrating his nobility: “Costco CEO pays his employees $17/hr on average, plus benefits. Earns less than $500k, refuses Wall Street Demands to cut employee salaries and benefits.”
Only one problem: Sinegal hasn’t been CEO for more than a year.
That honor now belongs to Craig Jelinek, who drew a salary of $649,999 last year, plus a $99,200 bonus.
Still, Costco looks a lot better these days than its closest competitor, Walmart, which saw employees in 100 different cities strike on Black Friday.
The image, unsurprisingly, was on Reddit before Facebook, and its designer openly admitted his information was from a 2005 New York Times article.
That didn’t seem to bother some enthusiastic Facebook users, though.
“That is what America is about…fairness and not greed,” wrote Ann Zimmer.
