If the reaction at this year’s Cannes Film Festival is any indication, a new collaboration between director Spike Lee and producer Jordan Peele is about to make waves when it hits theaters this August.
At the world premiere Monday, BlacKkKlansman—a new dramatic comedy based on the true story of a black and Jewish undercover cop team who managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan—reportedly received a standing ovation when it ended at the festival. There were also reportedly several points during the film when audiences erupted in applause. According to the Hollywood Reporter, there were “four minutes of applause during the credits and a six-minute standing ovation”—not a minor feat for the notoriously stuffy, French festival.
Following the screening Monday evening, the official trailer for the movie hit YouTube:
People at the screening tweeted praise for the film, calling it “painful and invigorating,” and “the Spike Lee movie we’ve been waiting for”:

BLACKkKLANSMAN: righteous agitprop that’ll crack you up when it isn’t making you heated with rage. Spike re-re-reaffirms his crucial place in the American cinema. Modern history, written with lightning.

Spike Lee’s #BlacKkKlansman is an utterly incendiary piece of Americana and the director’s best in over a decade. It’s vital and volatile and at times absolutely hilarious. #Cannes2018
