Luke Donald scored a double bogey on Twitter.
The second-top golfer in the world, Donald was angry after dropping a shot at the 18th hole on the third round at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass. Instead of sending a direct message slamming Gil Hanse, he sent his slam of the course designer as a public tweet.
“Gil Hanse is a cock!! Ha ha,” he wrote, before immediately deleting the tweet.
His mistakenly sent tweets, one of which included his cell phone number, were rapidly retweeted, and it resulted in an influx of calls from fans.
“I made a mistake, unfortunately. I sent a message that was not meant to go out on Twitter, and I take full responsibility,” said Donald, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“I realized it immediately, tried to delete it and tried to move on. Unfortunately, it got caught up there, and such is life. I didn’t mean to put it out there, and I apologize to anyone I offended, especially Gil Hanse.”
He added that he might take a break from Twitter after the flub, adding that he’d probably have to change his phone number after the error.
Despite removing the personal attack on Hanse, he refused to back down from his stance on the final hole of the course. “Nothing quite like hitting my best shot of the day into the last and walking off with a bogie, what a terribly re-designed green #sourtaste,” he tweeted Saturday.
