Rian Johnson cutting Porg cake

Could you eat a porg? Star Wars: The Last Jedi definitely left some of us torn as we watched Chewbacca almost make the plunge (although he almost certainly did off-screen), but director Rian Johnson brought the debate to a horrifyingly new level as he served up a slice of porg to the crowd around him.

According to Johnson, the cake, which was designed and decorated to look like a very realistic porg, was served during a party to celebrate the marketing team who worked on The Last Jedi.

As one of the main merchandise centerpieces of The Last Jedi (and creatures created in part out of necessity), you couldn’t find a better form for this celebratory pastry. It felt like porgs were everywhere but never overtook The Last Jedi, a delicate balance from both the film itself and the marketing. But the reality of delivering that cake out of the oven is that Johnson is cutting the first slice of the porg cake.

No porgs were harmed in the process of this cake cutting, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a little upsetting to see a dessert version of one little guys get carved up.

Even Johnson was torn about it. He profusely apologized ahead of time, but by the time he finished slicing up the porg—and stabbed it for good measure—he had a change of heart.

“Weirdly satisfying!” he said. “Strangely satisfying!”

We’re both appalled and intrigued.
