BuzzFeed News reported Thursday that the actors announced the split via a joint statement, saying the decision to separate “was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year.”

“We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship,” Aniston and Theroux said. “Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly.”

People on Twitter promptly lost their minds over news of their breakup, seemingly overcome by fits of heartbreak and devastation.

Of course, people also speculated about Aniston’s next move—and the fact that her and her ex-husband Brad Pitt are now both decidedly single for the first time since they divorced in 2005.

But not everyone was so keen on the idea of a rekindling of the flame between Aniston and Pitt, whose relationship was an emotional roller coaster for anyone invested in tabloid gossip in the early 2000s.
