Twitter’s a great venue for finding out up-to-the-minute news. It’s a terrible place to find out that news is about you and you’ve lost your job.
Diego Maradona, one of the most famed soccer players of all time, claimed he found out about losing his job as coach of Dubai team Al Wasl through the community. The 51-year-old World Cup winner was fired last week after a single season as coach.
“The fact I learned [about my sacking] via Twitter is a mess,” Maradona complained, according to Goal.com. That proclamation echoes comments made soon after the decision was revealed, as he suggested he did not receive official word of his firing before the news was made public,
An Argentine icon, Maradona led Al Wasl to 8th place in the 12-team United Arab Emirates Pro-League, while his team gave up a two-goal lead in in the Gulf Clubs Championship before losing on penalties.
However, Al Wasl’s vice president, Mohammed Bin Dukhan, debunked Maradona’s claims. Bin Dukhan said the club contacted Maradona through the Argentine embassy.
“If there was a delay it was because it took us time to evaluate the whole situation and then decide,” Bin Dukhan said.
We have to wonder though: did Maradona find out through a tweet sent by the Hand of God?
