There are wedding days, and then there are explosive wedding days.
This week, one freshly married couple was handed what could’ve been a disaster, but they ended up making an unforgettable event. Maria Maica de la Cruz and her husband, Arlo Gerald de la Cruz, got married with an actively erupting volcano looming in the background.
And the pictures are amazing.
The pair was married in the Philippines near the Mount Mayon volcano—which begun erupting earlier this week, gushing ash and lava. For a lot of people, this would’ve been taken as a disastrous event and possibly a ruined wedding. For the newlyweds, however, it was an opportunity for some of the most dramatic and memorable wedding photography and videography ever.

There’s video of the big moment too, and it looks like something out of a particularly dramatic romantic comedy—or an epic poem. As the pair kissed and embraced, Mount Mayon continued to spew ash and fire.

Needless to say, volcanic eruptions are serious business, and if the couple’s wedding had been any closer to Mount Mayon it might have been too dangerous to use it as a backdrop. According to the Washington Post, in fact, local authorities have had to evacuate people living within five miles of the eruption. But it looks like these newlyweds made the most out of an unexpected situation, albeit from a safe distance.
