According to the Wrap, Brittney Lewis claims that after competing in a modeling competition for Elite Model Management in Japan in 1988, Copperfield, who was one of the judges, invited her to see one of his shows in California. He asked permission from Lewis’ grandmother since she was only 17. She said that after the show, she noticed Copperfield pouring something into her drink, which she had barely touched. She next remembers being carried out of the bar and to the hotel and says Copperfield took her clothes off, and then she blacked out. She claims that the next day Copperfield made her write a letter saying nothing happened and that she was OK.

Lewis reported the accusations to the FBI in 2007. That same year, another woman, Lacey Carroll, accused Copperfield of assaulting her on his private island in the Bahamas. The FBI investigated the claim but later closed the case.

Copperfield released a statement on Wednesday before the accusations were published in the Wrap. He states that the “#MeToo movement is crucial and long overdue,” while also painting himself as the victim of false accusations and asking people not to “rush to judgment.”
