Eric Trump on Wednesday accused comedian and TV host Ellen DeGeneres of being in a covert government coalition that runs the world known as the “Deep State.” He did it on Twitter. He might have been joking.
In a preview for Thursday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, she responded all the same via her monologue. “I’m honored that you think I’m powerful enough to be part of a government conspiracy,” she says. “I’ve got my gay agenda meetings on Monday, and on Wednesday Beyoncé and I host an Illuminati brunch.”
Trump posited that because Twitter suggested he become one of DeGeneres’ 76 million followers, she must be secretly working with the other Twitter accounts that the algorithm suggested: Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

I’d like to hope Trump’s conspiratorial tweets are self-aware yucking that exist to illustrate a fair point: Twitter has lots of high-profile liberals and for conservative users, the suggested accounts may be off-putting. He’s definitely all in on this notion.

And yet he suggests that the platform has an overarching and secret agenda to push liberal ideologies. This notion overlooks the reach and influence of his father’s Twitter, the world’s most politically important social media account. It also overlooks the fact that his father’s account runs rampant with fake followers that help signal boost its agenda.
