Artist Psykzz has virtually cornered the GIF market on existential, abstract algorithmic angst. His work asks where being ends and where it begins, which is a lot of weight for a simple animated image to carry. His Tumblr has a background that is animated, making it ambiguous whether the fractal, moire, or spirographic images he’s posted are actually moving or are only moving inside your head.
This one, we assure you, is quite moving. In fact, the way each layer moves in a different direction gives a 3-D effect far more effective than some of the contemporary Hollywood blockbusters. While the image is mathematically generated, it is reminiscent of natural algorithmic patterns: the center of a flower, a nautilus, and even the cellular structure of bone.
He’s a bit of an undiscovered gem as of yet, and thus the image has a mere 45 notes, but we expect in a few months he’ll be psyching out hundreds of fans on a regular basis.
