The Stargate franchise will return in 2018, with its own equivalent to Star Trek: Discovery—albeit with a much lower budget.

As you may already know, Stargate: Origins is a historical prequel to the original Stargate movie, starring Ellie Gall as Catherine Langford, the founder of the Stargate project. Her father discovered Earth’s Stargate in 1928, and the show takes place 10 years later. In other words, there’s a definite Indiana Jones meets Agent Carter vibe here.

The first trailer introduces the main cast, including (of course) some perky sidekicks for brave archaeologist Catherine Langford, and a Nazi villain.

The historical sci-fi concept behind Stargate: Origins is undeniably cool, but it’s safe to say this show is what it looks like: a webseries. Rather than airing on traditional TV, it’s a 10-part miniseries of 10-minute episodes, all of which will air on MGM’s Stargate-only streaming service, Stargate Command. (Yes, that’s a real thing.) It’s cool to see a Stargate show with a female lead, but a little dispiriting to realize it will only be 100 minutes long, playing to a much smaller audience than its predecessors.

Stargate: Origins will begin on Feb. 15, 2018.
