It’s fairly common to bring politicians and the comedians who parody them on Saturday Night Live together for laughs. It’s far less common for those two people to find out they’ve also got something of a genetic connection.
Larry David revealed that he learned he and Senator Bernie Sanders(I-Vt.) were related earlier this summer after going on PBS’s Finding Your Roots, telling reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that he was “very happy” to learn about it and that Sanders was “like a third cousin or something.”
But when they both found out about their family ties to one another, there was a lot more shock and disbelief. The two were featured on the season premiere of Finding Your Roots. While their appearance on the same episode was due to their SNL connection, host Henry Louis Gates Jr. explained to David that he always compares the DNA of every person he has on the show with other guests.
And as it turned out, David shared enough of the same DNA with Sanders to prove that they were related.
