Netflix is working on a coming-of-age movie about teens who want to be rappers, and the initial cast list is packed with celebrities.
The movie is called The After Party, and according to Deadline it revolves around “two best friends on their last night together trying to achieve a record deal before one heads to college and the other leaves for military service.” It sounds kind of like Superbad, but with kids who want to get noticed by celebrities instead of Jules from science class. “In one wild night, a lot will go down before the sun comes up and these two lifelong friends either have succeeded on their quest or must go their separate ways,” reads the plot.

The streaming giant announced several cast members, including Quantico‘s Blair Underwood and rappers French Montana, Wiz Khalifa, and Kyle. Teyana Taylor—who is probably most recognizable for her performance in Kanye West’s “Fade” video, but recently turned New York Fashion Week on its head as a 5’4″ model—will also star.
Russell Simmons is co-producing the project, which reportedly started out as a work of love for the late WorldstarHipHop founder Lee “Q” O’Denat. Prior to his untimely death, O’Denat was inspired to develop the project “because of his love of such classic coming-of-age films Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and American Graffiti.”
This also marks the first scripted project for one of the production houses involved, Live Nation Productions (aka that company that puts on all the big concerts in football stadiums). Filming is reportedly already underway in New York, and the release date will be sometime in 2018.
