Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7.
So much has happened throughout Game of Thrones season 7 that it feels like years—not weeks—since some fans’ biggest complaint was the Ed Sheeran cameo. But while members of Mastodon have showed up again now that they’re part of the Army of the Dead, Sheeran’s visit to Westeros was probably a one-time thing.
Speaking to MTV News during a tour stop in Dallas, Sheeran explained that the cameo was a treat for longtime cast member (and longtime Sheeran fan) Maisie Williams, who portrays Arya Stark. A fan of the show since 2012, Sheeran called the decision to do the cameo a “very easy yes.” But that’s probably the last we’ll see of Sheeran’s nameless Lannister soldier and budding musician.
“No one wants to see me come back,” Sheeran said. “I wanted to be a cameo in it, and I’ve done the cameo. I’m cool with it, though. I enjoyed it.”
Sheeran’s scene left us with the impression that Arya didn’t kill the soldiers who offered her food and a spot at their fire, but even then Sheeran didn’t think he and his fellow soldiers would survive much longer. Director Matt Shakman doesn’t believe that Sheeran and those other Lannister soldiers were present for the loot train battle, but they were sent to the Riverlands specifically to keep peace at the Twins. Odds aren’t great for them surviving the winter.
“We were all quite young, those soldiers,” Sheeran said. “I doubt I’m going to survive for that long, to be honest, when there are dragons in the world.”
If the dragons haven’t done it by now, the White Walkers probably will.
