In the year of our Lord 2017, women still cannot go topless in public in Berkeley, California. However, the city council is considering opening the policy to women, 23 years after the law changed for men.

According to ABC 7 Los Angeles, Berkeley city council is considering amending the policy as a move for equal rights. Before 1994, any public area in Berkeley was a top-mandated zone, but a law was put in place to allow men to go topless after a California Berkeley student attended class in their birthday suit.

Now, after several women have raised the issue of equalizing nudity laws across all genders, one city council member has proposed the change. The council is scheduled to take up the topic next week, on Sept. 12.

“I just don’t think Berkeley should be defining [that] women are not allowed and men are allowed,” Berkeley city council member Kriss Worthington told ABC 7. Since Worthington’s proposal, he’s also heard input from people pushing for full nudity in public.
