Issa Rae’s HBO series Insecure has gained popularity for showing realistic depictions of Black life and relationships, including frequent raw sex scenes. But with so many hookups on the show, some have expressed criticism for a lack of condoms included in these scenes.

Last week Jozen Cummings wrote a piece questioning the show for excluding that important and awkward part of sexual encounters. “Ever since last season’s first sex scene between her and Daniel, the elephant in the room with these moments is that there is no mention of a condom and no showing of one being put on or unwrapped,” Cummings wrote. “Insecure has thrived because it depicts a reality that is drenched in awkward moments, and one of those awkward moments for anybody who has ever taken part in casual sex is what do with a condom.”
Last night Rae tweeted in response to these concerns, sharing that the show included condoms in a variety of background shots to try and imply their use. She conceded to critics and implied that a more explicit approach is something they will be working into the next season.

Some fans have pointed out that it’s not a requirement viewers have looked for in other shows.

Whether or not Insecure decides to change its approach to condom use, viewers will certainly still be tuning in to see these scenes play out on-screen.
