On Wednesday Time released an article titled “‘Hold My Avocado’ Is the Viral Catchphrase Millennials Have Been Looking For,” and boy did it sell the phrase. The magazine analyzed the reasoning for the “trend,” and it got awkward.

“In other words, ‘hold my avocado’ is a quick way to denote the contemporary millennial experience: seeking luxury wellness, but potentially derailed by sociopolitical developments,” Time wrote.

According to Time the phrase has become a favorite of many, and it all seems to have started with a joke pointing out the social differences between baby boomers and millennials. It’s funny, there’s no doubt about it. However, one tweet doesn’t make it a millennial catchphrase. And just a day after the story was released, the internet, Twitter in particular, fought back.

The Twitterverse even began roasting the news outlet.

It’s too soon to tell if “hold my avocado” will catch on.  Until then, let’s stick to peeling the avocado and making guacamole.
