Every December social news site Reddit polls its users to find the best submissions, users, comments — and more — from the preceding year.
It’s an impressive operation for a site that receives more than 1.2 billion page views and millions of discussions every month.
But for some users, it’s a flawed system: The awards skew too much to recent content, they argue.
So in the spirit of the freewheeling discussion site, redditor ProbablyHittingOnYou — who ranks second in comment points on the site — decided to create another awards event: a half-year best-of event, held in July.
His post in the site’s r/AskReddit section already had 148 comments Thursday afternoon after going live at around noon.
These are the leaders so far:
Best Big Community: AskScience: A heavily-moderated forum where redditors can ask and learn just about anything about science. Responses tend be thorough and highly informed. An interesting recent question: “Is there scientific evidence that eating prepackaged foods is less healthy than eating fresh?” Read the top-voted answer (from a food scientist) here.
Best Little Community: Game of Thrones: A one-year-old community dedicated to the HBO series Game of Thrones.
Best Comment: Responding to a colorized black and white image of Martin Luther King at his “I have a dream” speech, redditor FriesWithThat wrote “Am I missing something? I only see the content of his character.” (A reference to this famous line in the speech).
Best New Community: Random Acts of Pizza: We profiled this pizza-giving collective last month. It’s rise to the top has been rapid: After our story ran, CNN and ABC have both run features on the community.
Best Novelty Account: Reaction_On_My_Nub: The account created by Chicagoan April HIll gathered over 35,000 comment karma in under 18 days. Read our profile of Hill here.
Think these choices aren’t right? Then take full advantage of the Reddit system: submit your own ideas, and vote.
We’ll report on the verdict tomorrow.
