In a tweet, Chaffetz said he invited the former director—who was fired by President Donald Trump last week, setting off a political firestorm—to testify at 9:30am on Wednesday, May 24.

Chaffetz added that he still needed to speak with Comey because “evidently he has a new #.”

Comey’s testimony is sure to be contentious and stoke the political fires already burning since Trump suddenly fired him last week.

During the hearing, Comey will almost assuredly be asked about a memo he wrote implying that Trump pressured him into shutting down the FBI’s investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

On Tuesday, Chaffetz wrote a letter to acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to send the Oversight Committee “all memoranda, notes, summaries and recordings” that exist about communications between Comey and Trump. Delivery of the letters also has a deadline of May 24.

Comey has said he would testify in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee if it was held in public, according to New York Times sources.
