The Wonders, from the iconic 1996 Tom Hanks-produced That Thing You Do!, are back. It’s frankly the best reunion we’ve seen in years.

At the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, they played the momentous and still-awesome title track, semi-reformed as the Wonders: Actors Johnathon Schaech (who played Jimmy Mattingly, the lead singer and boyfriend of Liv Tyler’s character at the start of the film); Ethan Embry (the unnamed bassist); and Tom Everett Scott (who was great as drummer Shades, and got Tyler at the end) all rocked out.

Unfortunately, Hanks and Steve Zahn (who played side guitarist Lenny Haiz) weren’t present for the rousing reunion. Although, in jest, one of the other unnamed band members wore a Zahn cutout.

Scott had actually teased the event, which took place during the Goddamn Comedy Jam, featuring Bill Burr.

Write it off as nostalgia all you like. This flat-out rocked.
