Comedian Charlie Murphy died at the age of 57 on Wednesday morning and the comedy world immediately went into mourning for the longtime standup performer and one of the stars of Chappelle’s Show.

On Wednesday night, Dave Chappelle paid his own tribute to Murphy, appearing at a John Mayer show in Columbus, Ohio and saying a few kind words for his lost friend.

“Today, I got some terrible news,” Chappelle said. “My good friend, Charlie Murphy, passed away this morning, and everybody in comedy is heartbroken. So John, today you are a sight for sore eyes.” Then, he asked Mayer to sing “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me,” one of the singer’s newest recordings.

Before they began the song, Chappelle asked for everybody to put away their cell phones so “for just a few minutes tonight, let’s not a take a picture or video. Let’s make a memory…” Luckily for everybody who was not at the show but who loved Murphy, this particular person didn’t stop recording when Chappelle made his request.
