Photos from NASA have given us a sense of what it discovered on the surface of Mars, but a recent video from Finnish filmmaker and space enthusiast Jan Fröjdman gives us an incredible view of the planet’s surface.

Fröjdman spent three months processing, color grading, and incorporating more than 33,000 references of photos from NASA’s HiRISE camera to make a video overview of Mars. NASA’s images are captured in grayscale, so he colorized them and slowly put them together to give us a kind of video tour of Mars’ many distinct formations. The process took Fröjdman three months to complete, and the final product is more than worth it.

“There is a feeling that you are flying above Mars looking down watching interesting locations on the planet,” Fröjdman wrote. “And there are really great places on Mars! I would love to see images taken by a landscape photographer on Mars, especially from the polar regions. But I’m afraid I won’t see that kind of images during my lifetime.”
