The McDonald’s Snack Wrap is coming back…recession indicator?

The economy might be collapsing but hey, Snack Wraps are back.

McDonald’s has confirmed the return of its long-discontinued Snack Wrap, reigniting excitement and economic speculation. Originally introduced in 2006, the Snack Wrap featured crispy or grilled chicken, shredded lettuce, and cheese, all wrapped in a soft tortilla. It was discontinued in 2016 due to employee complaints over the difficulty of making the wraps and underwhelming sales.

The wrap’s return was announced via a cryptic social media post on April 15, 2025, teasing a return date of “0x.14.2025,” suggesting the wrap will reappear on the 14th of an unspecified month this year before October. 

McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger previously confirmed the return during a December 2024 interview, citing overwhelming customer demand.

One note is that while the Snack Wrap disappeared from U.S. menus in 2016, it remained available in certain international markets, where it is called the McWrap. Countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, Guatemala, and El Salvador continued to offer variations of the wrap. In Canada, for example, Snack Wraps have been priced at $3.50 or under, maintaining their status as an affordable menu item. According to The Takeout, the original Snack Wrap cost around $4 in the United States.

Not only that, McDonald’s has been seeing slower months: The company missed its quarterly profit goals for the first time in two years and has indicated a need to change with the times. It noted that consumers around the world are being “more discriminating” with how they spend their money, according to Reuters.

Journalist James Julian suggests that McDonald’s menu changes can serve as a barometer for economic conditions. The return of value items like the Snack Wrap may reveal the company’s anticipation of reduced consumer spending.
